Hope For Youth

The Book Fairies

Thanks to the The Book Fairies residents at the Hope For Youth Youth Shelter Program  were thrilled to walk away with bags of books and e-readers! They also had the opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering with this awesome organization! A Book Fairy staff member said, “We were thrilled to have the volunteers. They had a great time choosing books to take back to the houses and they were a huge help at the book fair.”

The Youth Shelter Program is proud to partner with organizations like The Book Fairies because it gives the residents a chance to give back. When the residents volunteer it increases their self-confidence. They are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment.

When The Book Fairies donate books to the residents it gives them a chance to learn and they can identify similarities between themselves and characters. This may help them better understand their feelings or situation.

The Book Fairies is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. The reading materials foster literacy and academic success, provide a respite from personal struggles, and nurture a love of reading across age groups. To learn more click here.

About The Hope For Youth Youth Shelter Program

The Youth Shelter program will provide support services to all residents 24 hours per day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year for up to 30 days. While youth are with us they will be provided with safe shelter, case management services, individual and family counseling, transportation, food, clothing, educational assistance and advocacy, medical care coordination and referrals, living skills development and other essential services. Hope For Youth can and will meet all the basic needs of this population while providing each youth with the support they need to reach their goals.

Within the program staff will help teach cleaning and cooking skills, offer workshops and tutoring, as well as needed clothing and personal items to help the youth feel safe and able to focus on future steps to remain safe. Our goal is to ensure every youth in Suffolk County has a warm bed, comfortable space to wake up and people who care to get them out the door to school while a long-term plan is developed. These children would otherwise be “couch-surfing” and falling victims to the streets without guidance and security.
