Youth Shelter Program

The Hope For Youth Shelter provides a safe, supportive and secure environment for all Suffolk County youth between the ages of 12 and 20 who find themselves in crisis and need a haven. The Runaway and Homeless Shelter in Babylon is a coed, short term, nine bed facility. The Shelter provides a safe and therapeutic environment to assess the safety, medical, and treatment needs of the youth. The goal of this program is to plan with the family for reunification when appropriate and/or other more permanent resources that can provide permanent housing to the youth. Length of stay can be anywhere from a day upwards to 60 days. So far in 2017, the shelter has had 89 residents and the average length of stay has been 9 days.

The program provides support services to all residents 24 hours per day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year for up to 60 days.

While youth are with us they will be provided with:
  • safe shelter
  • case management services
  • individual
  • family counseling
  • transportation
  • food
  • clothing
  • educational assistance and advocacy
  • medical care coordination and referrals
  • living skills development
  • other essential services

Hope For Youth can and will meet all the basic needs of this population while providing each youth with the support they need to reach their goals.Within the program, staff help teach cleaning and cooking skills, offer workshops and tutoring, as well as needed clothing and personal items to help the youth feel safe and able to focus on future steps to remain safe. Our goal is to ensure every youth in Suffolk County has a warm bed, comfortable space to wake up and people who care to get them out the door to school while a long-term plan is developed.  These children would otherwise be “couch-surfing” and falling victims to the streets without guidance and security.
